Notes & History
On February 13, 1750, 26 years after its foundation, the branch parish of Sankt Martin was elevated to the rank of an independent parish. From 1724 to April 30, 1734, Sankt Martin belonged as a branch parish to the city of Gyula, and from May 1, 1734 to February 12 1750, to the parish of Elek. This explains why the places of origin of the settlers are not listed in the parish registers of Sankt Martin. Only in the death registers was the mention "catolicus germanicus" entered under the birth heading, which meant "Catholic from Germany". Since the first parish registers of Gyula were destroyed by a fire, the origins of our ancestors can only be determined from the Historia Domus of Gyula and Elek.)
Research Tip
Civil status registers (after 1895) are held at the relevant National or County Archives. Parish metrics from earlier centuries are often microfilmed by FamilySearch and available for free online.
